Description

As it is known the new version of SeaMonkey 2 uses a new toolkit. Unfortunately
the splash screen option is not supported in the new toolkit. That is why the
SeaMonkey 2 has the splash screen no more. It is very inconvenient because a
user does not know exactly if he successfully double-clicked on the SeaMonkey
icon. Also it causes problems as a user can start more instances of SeaMonkey at
the same time and it can lead to the overload.

I have developed a small program. It can be a solution for the splash screen
option for windows systems.

The program works as a launcher. The program shows the splash screen and then
starts the SeaMonkey web browser. As a SeaMonkey main window is shown the splash
screen disappears.

Installation steps:

1. Download the launcher program (Windows OS is required to run the launcher).

2. Copy or save the file launch.exe in to the directory where SeaMonkey is
installed.

3. Create a shortcut for the launcher on the desktop. You can drag and drop the
launcher icon with a RIGHT mouse button from the SeaMonkey directory to the
desktop. Then select from the popup menu "Create shortcut here".

4. Now you can start SeaMonkey with this shortcut and enjoy a splash screen.

5. If you use a firewall, please make sure to properly setup the firewall for
the launcher program. The launcher starts the web browser and some firewalls can
detect, the launcher program try to start the program (SeaMonkey in this case)
to access to the Internet. This is a normal behavior. In this case you should
grant the access rights for the launcher program in your firewall. The launcher
program does not connect to the Internet itself.

I tried this, but my custom splash screen "seamonkey.bmp" is not displaying... in fact, nothing displays until Seamonkey itself starts up normally. What am I missing here??

Hello jaimec,

thanks for the question.

Two things are important:

1. The launcher uses his internal picture for the splash screen. This is the original flash picture from the SeaMonkey version 1.1.19. No custom picture (seamonkey.bmp) is supported at the moment.

2. The launcher looks for the window on your desktop with a title "SeaMonkey". If the launcher finds the window with a title "SeaMonkey", it thinks the browser is already started and the launcher closes the splash screen.

It means if you start the launcher directly from the SeaMonkey program folder, there is a window with a name "SeaMonkey" already on your desktop (the program folder window has also the title "SeaMonkey"). That is why in this case you don't see the splash screen. The launcher thinks the SeaMonkey is already started.

You should copy the launcher into the SeaMonkey program folder and then create a shortcut of the launcher on your desktop. Then you should close all windows and also the SeaMonkey itself (if opened) and start the launcher by double clicking on its shortcut on your desktop. Now you should see the SeaMonkey splash screen.

Hope it helps.

Gotcha. It's working now, but I'd really like it to work the way the old toolkit did... starting with a "seamonkey.bmp" graphic if one is found in the same directory as seamonkey.exe... but this will do for now. Thanks.

Hi All,

Thomas W. has reached me, but I cannot answer per e-mail, so I post my answer here.

First thanks for the question. The forum registration is working fine. I have checked it just now with antispam code. I do not understand what problems you can have. Just try again.

By the way you can post anonymously here without registration.

Splash Screen Launcher is working fine with SM 2.30. This is my current version I use. I can test other versions of SM later and post results here.

Very important things you have to do (from the first post of this topic):

Please keep in mind while starting the shortcut you have to close all windows with a title "seamonkey". Also the windows explorer has to be closed if a window with the seamonkey directory is open.

Because the launcher looks for the windows on your desktop with a title "SeaMonkey". If the launcher finds the window with a title "SeaMonkey", it thinks the browser is already started and the launcher closes the splash screen.

Hope it helps :)
